The Montana Department of Environmental Quality, Energy Bureau and the Montana Department of Transportation are drafting a 5-year plan to spend Montana’s $43 million allocation of National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Funding (NEVI). NEVI is one of the programs from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that passed Congress last fall. This program provides funding to states to deploy electric vehicle charging stations along designated interstate and highway travel corridors. In Montana Interstates 15, 90, 94 and US Highway 2 and 93 are the designated corridors eligible for NEVI funding.

DEQ and MDT is interested in hearing from key stakeholders, including local governments, to help inform the State’s plan for spending these funds. NEVI funding specifically contemplates public/private partnerships to install charging stations. There can be opportunities for local governments to host electric vehicle charging stations, which can attract customers to local businesses and provide an additional source of revenue.

DEQ and MDT are very interested in hearing from Montana’s cities and towns on the creation and implementation of this program.
